Summary of the
Proceedings of the Inaugural Ceremony of the Busia Foundation, 18th July
1998
The proceedings of the inaugural ceremony of the Busia foundation held
at the British council Hall on July 18 1998 contained a series of
interesting lectures by distinguished Ghanaian Scholars who have been in
one way or other associated with the late Prof Kofi Abrefa Busia, and
present their assessment of him from their various perspectives.
For example, the well known Professor Emeritus J H Nketia,
ethno-musicologist who first started his inter-relationship with Dr K A
Busia in the 1950s, presented him as a researcher.
Professor K. E de Graft- Johnson, sociologist and a former student of Dr
Busia presented him in his paper as a teacher. The late Very Rev'd
Professor Emeritus Kwesi Dickson, former President of All African
Conference of churches and served for seven years as the President of
the Ghana Methodist Church, and taught also for many years in the Dept.
of the study of Religious University of Ghana presented his paper on
"Busia as a Christian".
Other presentations on Busia at the event continued to evaluate his life
from various angles. Notably the lecture on "Busia in Exile” was ably
presented by Dr K A Busia's own daughter, Professor Abena Busia,
lecturer at the State University of Rutgers in New Jersey, United
States. B. J. Da Rocha, a well known legal consultant and general
Secretary of Dr Busia's Progress Party from 1969 - 1972, delivered his
paper on Busia as a politician and a statesman.
The booklet detailing this event also contains a keynote address by Mr.
J. H Mensah, finance Minister in the Second Republic of Dr. Busia, and
currently senior Minister in the present administration, on "The Legacy
of Kofi Busia"
